Coffee made from beans in cat poo

Kopi Luwak  is a rare and expensive coffee, costing as much as $200 a pound, that is prepared using coffee cherries that have been eaten and partially digested by the Asian Palm Civet (picture below), then harvested from it’s feces. Yes you read correctly – from it’s feces!

A few hours after the civet eats the coffee cherries and digests them, the beans come out in it’s poo. The beans are picked up off the forest floor and are then cleaned and roasted. Because of this “all natural” processing, the coffee is said to have a rich and heavy flavor, with hints of caramel or chocolate.

Kopi Luwak is featured in the 2007 film, The Bucket List
Morgan Freeman’s character responds when asked about Kopi Luwak, “Never catch me drinking that shit.”  Don’t think I want to try it either!
